My first wife. She didn't support me while I was undergoing severe depression and she was a cause of it.

Hey, wait! Maybe instead of an out and out dating relationship, what you might need is just a one-night stand!

I was in excruciating pain after a medical procedure and could barely walk.  Someone decided I
didn't need a wheelchair, I was at a hospital.  Every step was wall pounding pain.
A roommate that I grew to love, then she ripped me off, while I was moving, using my car keys that disappeared a couple weeks prior.  It still bothers me...a lot.
An unnamed person who I thought wanted to marry me.  Since he didn't share his plans, I "assumed"
it would be after I finished school.  After so many years of waiting, I quit after my masters believing he would come and scoop me up immediately.  Now two years later I am making my plans without looking to marriage and plan to get my next degree.
We are still good friends, I will always love him however even if he doesn't want to be with me.

The people who have seriously "let me down" were among those that I trusted and loved.

I like Thrifty's vague answer, so I'll second that. I've become pretty good at managing my expectations to avoid those unpleasant scenarios.

As you know, it was the ex-wife. We were together for 12 years and finally got married, but that didn't last 3 months. She took my child and disappeared. That was 20 years ago.

    Yeah, I know.
And I know I need to treat myself better.
Sort of how I try to treat others.
