Are you going to enter Trump's new Contest?

Trump is holding a contest to design and create up to ten new Freedom Cities built from the ground up on federal land. It proposes an investment in the development of vertical-takeoff-and-landing vehicles. The creation of hives of industry sparked by cutting off imports from China. And a population surge by encouraging would-be-parents to get on with procreation. The part about encouraging would-be-parents to get on with procreation cracked me up - only Trump would include something like that in a contest. Cheers!

"...to design and create up to ten new Freedom Cities..." This phrase immediately brought to mind what we in upstate New York call "Rocky's Folly" (officially the Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller Empire State Plaza). It was the mid 60s and I had just gotten my first real job in the city (Albany). Nelson Rockefeller was the governor.  The design is officially called The Empire State Plaza or ESP (NY is the Empire State). Engineers came to town and condemned a whole area of the city in the neighborhood of the capitol building. The neighborhood was actually mostly family owned brownstones and shops. But unfortunately, the racial profile in that area had been changing as reflected in the 1950 census.

Here is an excerpt from Trip Advisor on the page for this tourist attraction, "Well I was just out of high school when this was started it is nice to see but my friends I went to school with lost their homes and business were closed to build it".

Of course I should mention that starting in the 50s, the State was also building the The W. Averell Harriman State Office Building Campus, an office park in western Albany with far more office space than the ESP, with plenty of room to build more office buildings that have gone up in the interim. The space at the ESP is finite, no room to build any additional space. But Rocky got his name on a landmark.

Yeah but I bet the plans for the  Empire State Plaza didn't include encouraging would-be-parents to get on with procreation like Trump's plan does. Awhile back I watched a documentary on how they built Little Island in the Hudson river. I really like it's design and I wouldn't mind visiting it. Cheers!

Little Island is NYC. Upstate NY and NYC are two different worlds. I haven't been to that park but I have been to many places of interest in NYC. The Little Island installation was funded by private sources with an assist from the state and the city and isn't a monument to an individual. The ESP was wholly funded by the state. I'm sure the rest of Trump's plan is equally as egregious. That one line in the original post still strikes a nerve, and I was surprised to find that quote on Trip Advisor on my first attempt to Google the subject, so I'm not the only one.

The only hives Trump might interest me in would be the ones covering him from head to toe.

Hives all over his body combined with his orange makeup would make him look like the Thing from the Fantastic 4 (without the muscles). Cheers!

Yikes! You better put on a pair of fishing hip waders before you do that. Trump's butt is pretty huge so you might wind up sinking in knee deep. Cheers!

It is a scary thought. But it gets a bit cheery if you think about Zack twisting his foot around as he pulls it out. Cheers!

The only part of the contest is design and create the new cities. The rest is just his plan, with as far as I can tell, no details around funding or implementing.  Just more political hot air. I'm not sure why he wants another baby boom. It's true we have a worker shortage, but there are thousands of immigrants who would like a job instead of a deportation order.

I give everyone else credit here for their input. Without reading in detail,  my first thought was him aspiring to be the next Jim Jones.

    Forgive me.

    Thanks. :)
    Yes, I think I may.
I believe he said at some point:

"I could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody, and I wouldn't lose any voters, OK?" he said. "It's, like, incredible."

A contest? You mean, he will be accepting design proposals. Kind of standard practice for any large project.

The baby boom encouragement is because the Dems are claiming we need to import more illegals because Americans are not reproducing enough.

I think all that orange clown makeup he's so fond of wearing has finally soaked into that nincompoop's head.

VTOL vehicles... See the discussion elsewhere on parking, and that's in two dimensions, not three!

Is he serious with his idea? It looks all very futuristic and misses the point that you might build factories, homes, shops etc but still need attract companies to them; and you also need address why you import so much from the Far East (Far West?). It's no good building big mass-production plants if they can't sell their products at below Chinese, Indian or South American prices.

No employment prospects means no incentive for couples to move there, and to breed (no future work for the fruit of their loins); but even if the places are established they would need far smaller work-forces than in the past for the same output of similar products.

Or rather than one or two big firms, a plethora of smaller, highly-specialised, trades might work.

Someone elsewhere sent me a link to photos of the derelict Packard(?) car factory - I forget the city - but it remains a ruin because the city cannot afford to clear the site, and cannot attract developers of either homes or new businesses. There may be other reasons I don't know, but the ruins won't help attract them. Maybe it's not new cities anyone needs but existing ones brought up to scratch.

"Freedom Cities". Strange name - I wonder what it is meant to mean? It looks vaguely a cross between Chinese or Soviet "Five-Year Plans", the "XXX Parkway" railway-station names in Britain, and "Chief xxxxx Officer" directorial titles and speech: mostly pretension, little meaning.

["Parkway" after the town name means only a large station car-park for commuters using the trains to the city-centre not far away.]

I think he is serious but it would turn out like his wall. At first he said the wall was going to be 30 feet high and made from brick. Then he said it was going to be fencing that was impenetrable. Turned out people were cutting through it with $10 hacksaws. I think his futuristic city will turn out to be a couple of condos with leaky roofs. Cheers and happy weekend!
