That song almost got me thrown down an ore pass once. It would have been an 1800 foot drop so I probably wouldn’t of survived. I was a Motor man Switch Man in a nickel mine and once I signaled the motor man to come ahead and dump his ore cars down the ore chute. But I neglected to open the ore chute door and 10 or 15 tons of ore spilled on the door and track. We had to clear it up - and to make the job easier I sung the 16 ton song - which didn't go over too well with my partner at first. Well we were cleaning it up we weren't making any bonus and all the shoveling was wearing out the toes of our boots. Which meant we would have to go to the company store and get new pairs of boots on credit. So I sung the part about selling my soul to the company store real low and my partner started to get into the grove. Cheers and happy weekend!
