"Eighty-six or 86 is American English slang used primarily in the hospitality industry and sometimes in the military.

In the hospitality industry, it is used to indicate that an item is no longer available, traditionally from a food or drinks establishment, or referring to a person or people who are not welcome on the premises. Its etymology is unknown, but the term seems to have been coined in the 1920s or 1930s.

Military personnel might use "86" informally to refer to scrapping equipment (e.g., "That old radio got 86'd") or ending a plan or mission (e.g., "The op was 86'd due to bad weather")."

Not asking about 86ing a thing or menu item.
    But a person.

I gave you the meaning as it refers to a person.

"referring to a person or people who are not welcome on the premises"

I can provide the words, but I can't make someone understand them.

     I did miss that sentence.

But that is in the hospitality industry.
It means something else in the military in regards to a person.
And the same meaning in the criminal world.  It means to kill someone or get rid of them permanently.

Now, Comey being a former FBI director absolutely knew all of these meanings.

I guess you missed that sentence, too.  There is no militry mention of using it in relation to a person.

The rest of your comment is just parroting what I have already written.  So, by all means, let's argue about something we both wrote.  The only difference is that I wrote it first.

I did not claim you posted the military meaning relating to a person. You did not.

You just can't admit you are wrong, can you?  No point in further discussion since it is apparent that you reply to comments without actually reading them.

I have long heard of people being 86'd,  meaning removed from the premises or otherwise ejected. However, I just learned there is a very uncommon usage which can mean something more sinister. I personally have never heard it used to mean assassinate, but perhaps I run in the wrong circles. I do not think Comey is capable of being so brazen as to call for violence against Trump, but it should be investigated. The left should calm down and the right should quit jumping to conclusions.

Like you, that's been the general meaning I've heard it used to mean.  Unless I'm mistaken, Comey posted that as something he saw, not something he initiated, but yes, let's get it investigated. This post was edited by Spunky at May 17, 2025 8:39 AM MDT

And also investigate everyone who bought one of these mugs or T-shirts or one of hundreds of similar styles.

That is the only way I have heard it used directed at a person.
The burial hole is 8ft long and 6ft deep.

86 has fairly broad interpretations as a slang term — and can simply mean to nix something - (say no to something or get rid of something. Cheers and happy weekend!
