What does this have to do with the price of pickles?

Yesterday Trump made a series of posts about the Canada/US trade war. The following one confuses me because can’t see what it has to do with how much I will be paying for pickles tomorrow.

"Wow! Canada has just announced that it is backing statehood for Palestine. That will make it very hard for us to make a Trade Deal with them. Oh' Canada!!!" .

Cheers and happy weekend!

Trump uses tariffs to get what he wants for other things.   Like border security,  drug policies, peace deals etc.

Recognizing Palestine as a state is reason enough for 50% tariffs to me. So be glad it is Trump and not me.

Yesterday Canada’s Prime Minister said he hadn't talked to Trump in a few days. Then he added that they will talk when “it makes sense”. Cheers!

Maybe our Prime Minister made a word sense mistake. He said – they will talk when it makes sense. But he meant – we will talk when it makes cents. Trump is bad news for business on both sides of the border. One of the things our Prime minister talked about was the steal tariffs and the possible new markets for Canadian steal (if America is not buying it). Use more steal in the construction of new homes in Canada. Cheers!

I thought the PM might have meant when Trump makes sense. That hasn't happened in a long time.

Yeah I was just trying to be humorous.
Our PM knows that trying to reach a fair deal with Trump doesn't make sense and if a deal is reached Trump will likely break it on a whim.

This year was the first year in many - many years that BC didn’t bother to export it’s Bing cherries to the US because it didn’t make economic sense – but Canada did find another market for those cherries that made sense and cents. Cheers!

Aluminium too. Canada has just shipped tonnes of it to Europe and Japan that had originally been earmarked for export to the US, tariff free and getting a better price for it - and US industry is screaming.
Tariffing a product that cannot be produced locally, or not in sufficient quantity to meet demand, is beyond stupid - they'll just sell it elsewhere and you'll miss out. This post was edited by Slartibartfast at August 10, 2025 12:20 AM MDT

There are Americans waking up this morning that will be be paying $6 more for a pound of coffee – thanks to Trump. For the past 4 months Canada and a lot of other countries have been working together to continue trade without Trump. Cheers!
