What does this have to do with the price of pickles?

Yesterday Trump made a series of posts about the Canada/US trade war. The following one confuses me because can’t see what it has to do with how much I will be paying for pickles tomorrow.

"Wow! Canada has just announced that it is backing statehood for Palestine. That will make it very hard for us to make a Trade Deal with them. Oh' Canada!!!" .

Cheers and happy weekend!

Well I would change the word “guide” to “dictate” and add a couple of words like “sour grapes”. Trump put some of the highest tariffs on Canada – and I bet it is because we told him Canada is not for sale. Cheers!

No, it is because of Canada's tariffs on the USA, poor border security, failure to fight fentanyl trafficking, etc. And because of current support for a Palestine state.

A vast majority of the illegals entering the US are entering from Mexico – but Trump just gave Mexico an 80 day tariff extension. Only about 1% of the fentanyl entering the US is entertaining from Canada – the rest is coming in from Mexico and China. Canada has been following the trade agreement it made with Trump during his first term. But that agreement is were the sour grapes started. Trump kept insisting Canada drop it’s Canadian content broadcasting regulations. But Canada told Trump they would never agree to that - and we never did. Canada will recognize Palestine as a State just like a lot of other countries will so it shouldn’t effect the price of our pickles.

    Cheers!

No. What they have said they will do:

Canada plans to recognize the State of Palestine at the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in September 2025, marking a significant shift in its foreign policy. This recognition is contingent upon the Palestinian Authority committing to key reforms, including holding general elections in 2026 without Hamas's participation, demilitarizing the future state, and undertaking governance reforms.

Trump uses tariffs to get what he wants for other things.   Like border security,  drug policies, peace deals etc.

Recognizing Palestine as a state is reason enough for 50% tariffs to me. So be glad it is Trump and not me.

Yesterday Canada’s Prime Minister said he hadn't talked to Trump in a few days. Then he added that they will talk when “it makes sense”. Cheers!

Maybe our Prime Minister made a word sense mistake. He said – they will talk when it makes sense. But he meant – we will talk when it makes cents. Trump is bad news for business on both sides of the border. One of the things our Prime minister talked about was the steal tariffs and the possible new markets for Canadian steal (if America is not buying it). Use more steal in the construction of new homes in Canada. Cheers!

I thought the PM might have meant when Trump makes sense. That hasn't happened in a long time.

Yeah I was just trying to be humorous.
Our PM knows that trying to reach a fair deal with Trump doesn't make sense and if a deal is reached Trump will likely break it on a whim.

This year was the first year in many - many years that BC didn’t bother to export it’s Bing cherries to the US because it didn’t make economic sense – but Canada did find another market for those cherries that made sense and cents. Cheers!

Aluminium too. Canada has just shipped tonnes of it to Europe and Japan that had originally been earmarked for export to the US, tariff free and getting a better price for it - and US industry is screaming.
Tariffing a product that cannot be produced locally, or not in sufficient quantity to meet demand, is beyond stupid - they'll just sell it elsewhere and you'll miss out. This post was edited by Slartibartfast at August 10, 2025 12:20 AM MDT

There are Americans waking up this morning that will be be paying $6 more for a pound of coffee – thanks to Trump. For the past 4 months Canada and a lot of other countries have been working together to continue trade without Trump. Cheers!

EVERYTHING will be going up, either incrementally or suddenly. The US doesn't produce potash worth a damn, so all foods grown in America (or fed on it, like beef) will be more expensive due to the new tariff on that. Everything that contains aluminium, from canned soda to airplanes. Modern electronics also require rare earth minerals refined only in China, so that's another swathe of products from toys to Teslas.

Not so long ago Trump was bragging about how he signed an executive order were there will be not tax on tips. Now it is getting to the point were Americans might not be able to afford their cups of coffee let alone afford to leave a tip. Cheers!

Thought I would add that in a sad way Trump’s tariffs are befitting a lot of people in my community. USA food products are not selling well so they get donated to the Salvation Army.

Sad part is soon there might not be any USA food products in my community because we are finding new trading partners. Cheers!
