When people say "Jesus is returning soon", what does that mean?

I've heard it my entire life and he still hasn't showed up. Do they even know what they're talking about?

    It is a wrong understanding
    to think that he will return 
    in a physical sense.

    The second coming is actually
    the resurrection of Christ Consciousness
    within ourselves.

    I can scarcely speak for all who use the phrase, but I know few who make this proclamation on a regular basis.

    I have interpreted it to mean: "I won't be around to reap the consequences of this poor decision, so I couldn't care less if it causes great damage to others."

    It may also be noteworthy that the only people I know who make this statement are over 50.

Just splitting hairs here but isn't the whole point that people who believe do NOT make decisions that will harm others because God will see and know and will pass judgement so they would generally want to be 'good;

    "It may also be noteworthy that the only people I know who make this statement are over 50."  I take it you are under 50? Personally I have witnessed that there seem to be an awful lot of very religious under 50s in America

    It means Jesus is coming back to reign and rule the Earth. 
    It is only in recent years that conditions are becoming right for Jesus Christ to return. Such as Israel becoming a nation again. The country listed in the Bible as being in existence at the time.
     But there is still more that must come to pass before Jesus' return.

    Jesus  the Messiah will return to Earth,  raise the  dead, hold last judgment, and set up formally and gloriously the Kingdom of God on Earth. 

    Sin and suffering shall end. "The lion will eat grass like the bull.."

    The Baha'i Faith people believe their founder -Baha'u'Allah- is the return of Jesus. 

    Baha'u'Allah pronounced 'ba-howla'

    People have been saying it for almost 2000 years. Does the word "soon" have some other meaning that I'm unaware of?

    Yes but the Bible has not been saying it for 2000 years.  It is only recently that the some prophesies have come to pass that must be fulfilled before His return....and there are still some more.

    I can't remember when I last used that phrase, but when I did it was as a reminder that we should be paying attention to what we are doing because it directly relates to eternity for those of us who think we have immortal souls.

  • A guy named Harold Camping built an entire ministry out of predicting the Rapture. Fortunately he's stopped doing that (he got tired of waiting and went to complain about the delay in person) but at the time of his last prediction (about 2014) some wag set up a web page that said, in effect, "We are animal loving atheists. If you register your pets with us for $50 each we will guarantee to look after them after you have been called up to meet Jesus." I hope they made lots of money.

    But the definitive story comes from the Vatican where the Pope called together his
    College of Cardinals and said, "I have some good news and some bad news. The good news is that our Lord will return next Saturday. The bad news is that the email came in from Salt Lake City."

    I've been a Christian for over 40 years and I too have heard many times that Jesus will return soon. Scripture tells us that nobody knows when Jesus will return but Christians should live as if He could come anytime. Thing is, saying that Jesus is coming soon won't speed up the process. Not to mention the fact that several things need to happen before then, one of which is that the Man of Lawlessness (Antichrist) must appear first. (2 Thessalonians 2_1-12)
