Were you nervous the first time you boarded a plane?

  • Nope! First time was when I was 15 and went up in an old AT-6 trainer plane with my Uncle. What a blast! Man, could he fly! Under bridges and upside down and under wires! I loved it!

I was petrified.  I was 18 years old and was flying from NY to San Juan to visit my best friend from high school.  In those days, you were served a meal in flight.  I was clutching the arms of my seat so tightly that I said I didn't want anything.  Then, when I landed, I was sure my friend wouldn't find me at the airport.  Fortunately, she did. :)

The first trip I made to the United Kingdom was nerve racking, but things kind of got better afterward. My problem was not being able to fart for 7 hours.

I was on meds that caused an unusual amount of farting on occasion. That excuse is as good as any. This post was edited by Zack at March 9, 2017 10:47 AM MST

  • Same as Baba, I was just excited :)  I recall my daughter's first flight.. she was very scared..and to make it worse it was  long flight, 8 hours I think, from UK to Toronto.. then we missed the connecting flight to Pittsburgh because she didn't feel well as she had had a bad ear-popping experience as we descended.. I really struggled to get her to agree to the next part of the journey - a plane from Toronto to Pittsburgh but the funny thing was she loved it! Tiny plane, puddle-hopper and we flew low.. over the lakes, which daughter argued was the sea...lol and being able to see the *sea* took her mind off being scared :P

By the time we flew back she was an old hand and told me off for going round in circles in Toronto airport as SHE thought she knew better :P

    Fab memories.

  • I'm still nervous going on planes, despite the amount of times I've been. The first time I was only about 2 years old, so I don't remember (my parents say I slept a lot of the time). But I don't enjoy flying, I just like getting to the place I'm going. Even the most recent time I went on a plane I was glad to be sitting next to my best friend the whole time, since that relaxed me :)

  • Hi thebigd,

I was nervous only in the sense of excited, delighted...
It was maybe 1962, and the plane a little puddle-jumper going all the way from Aberdeen, WA to Seattle! From there a connecting flight to somewhere else, oh it was a very BIG deal!

Then age 22, I remember flying out of a seminar in Rio de Janeiro, and noticed a young Brazilian woman my age crying and clutching her prayer beads, terrified. I just talked to her, explained how much fun flying was and she was going to love this! She gave me some tiny leather shoes on a key chain and we had a lovely flight. No.  I was 15 and very excited.  Now, you couldn't pay me enough to fly.

  • Ha ha, Harry I can recall my father's opinion on that, "Sure I will fly anywhere, as long as I can keep one foot on the ground."

I'm nervous every time.  I'm usually sick at my stomach for a couple of days before flying.  My sister is aggravated with me right now because I will not make a 1.6-hour  flight, but am making a 12-hour drive instead.

So, the entire 5th grade class at school got a ride in a Cessna that belonged to a classmate's father. It was exciting. Unfortunately, 40 years later, he crashed and all 6 people on board perished.
