The significance of Three predates the Abrahamic religions and exist far outside it's small geographical beginnings.
In fact it's one of the concepts that was borrowed by the Abrahamic religions from Zoroastrian and other early Middle Eastern pagan religions and cultures.
I'm being serious when I say that maybe from a religious and cultural perspective, it's a ancient primal, trolling mechanism to breed conflict by tipping the Ying & Yang.
There is much academic speculation about it. Some of the more interesting theories revolve around it being from early humans noticing the existence of genders/sexes. There are female, male, and neuter/ hermaphroditic. Others from early humans first noticing three natural elements, earth, air, and water. Fire being a later element that brought on the conflicting idea of four which come cultural academics site as being a source of conflict with the culture of three. Some speculate it might be from the earliest understandings of life/ existence. Animal( sentient life/existence), plant( non-sentient Life/existence), mineral ( a non-living existence). It could be from our early concepts of the visceral. Good, Evil, Amoral/ indifferent. What influences our thinking and makes us, us. Mind, Body, Soul.
Then again these concepts could have just as easily been created after the fascination with the three concept. It's worth noting as well how well the number three exemplifies and works with both the Golden Ratio and the Silver ratio.
When reading and learning Chinese Ink Painting (Southern school) it was often noted that in Chinese art things were in threes. Three trees, (a host tree and two guest trees) three mountains, etc. On asking I was told that three is the largest number that most people recognize without counting. If four trees are drawn, the mind switches from appreciation of the art to the logical mode and the trees are counted. With many trees you paint two or three groups of trees. The mind sees three forests and appreciates the art, and does not switch to logic. Could this be part of the significance of three's in many of the symbols?
a basic root structure for manifestation of life and things manifested always there are three things present...why? an inherit part of it applies to our thoughts etc as well. for instance the thinker the thought and the stuff that cements it into play/holds it all together. Only one that has ever explained it at that level, that I have read, is Krishnamurti. Saw him once in New York on my way to India, part of his talk touched on that, He seemed to understand it pretty well. Have heard others touch on this but not in detail. Glis gives a good vast coverage of how it is seen in various areas.

In the United States Marine Corps, many units and types of units are generally formed on the theory of three, starting with the smallest and continuing to the encompass of the entire Corps itself. Read on:
A Fire Team consists of 3 Marines and a Team Leader.
A Squad consists of 3 Fire Teams and a Squad Leader.
A Platoon consists of 3 Squads and a Platoon Leader, also known as a Platoon Commander.
A Company consists of at least 3 Platoons and a Company Command element.
A Battalion consists of at least 3 Companies and a Battalion Command element.
A Regiment consists of at least 3 Battalions and a Regimental Command element.
A Brigade consists of at least 3 Regiments and a Brigade Command element.
There are 3 active Marine Infantry Divisions, 3 active Marine Air Wings, and 3 active Marine Support Groups*.
