Should we be able to have a reasoned debate about immigration without people resorting to calling others names? Interesting debate on radio

Interesting debate as I say... and covered exactly what I was talkin about the other day... that it can be very hard to even talk about immigration and the various problems associated with it - without being called racist, hateful, negative  or, as happened to me, being compared to Trump or Farage. And this is interesting because it highlights exactly the problem, there seems little opportunity for reasoned debate, in a climate where when one attempts to do that, one is shouted down or accused of really quite unpleasant things.. and that is something that is happening on a wide-scale, here - I had no idea, of course about elsewhere, just knew that here, it's increasingly acknowledged that  people are afraid to talk about it..., I won't dwell on my own experience on here, in many ways that's irrelevant but that it highlighted exactly the point made in the radio prog - that it seems we cannot have even a reasoned debate without being accused of things.  Anyway, if anyone wishes and has time to spare perhaps have a listen.... it does kinda sum up how many/most Brits feel.. There will, of course be extremes either side outside of the debate on the radio  but mostly, the majority just want to be able to have a reasoned debate and discussion about the problems, very real, reasoned problems, for example shortage of land for housing, pressure on the countryside for house-building in a small country, environmental limitations such as waster and ability to deal with waste water without polluting the rivers and streams etc... associated with large scale immigration.  Just to re-emphasise, I have no problem with ANY race or country's immigrants - and I treat all people equally and fairly. I've certainly no wish to get insulted on here again, but as it came up, I did want to offer the opportunity for people to perhaps hear other Brits on the subject without me getting involved :)
That aside it's always a really good prog to listen to regardless of the subjects discussed and I thoroughly recommend it to anyone :)

  • I'm not sure that people here are afraid, as much as not interested. Just my opinion, but I don't really see the general Q&A as a great place to debate effectively.

  • I agree with JBopine. Perhaps in one of the groups, it might be better. Afraid? No but I wouldn't mind a debate without all the hate.

I often hear people imply that rational people make reasoned arguments and irrational people resort to name calling, smear campaigns etc etc.

This is simply not true. Name calling is very rational when people know that making an honest open reasoned argument would be less effective in accomplishing their objectives. People often recognize that it's more effective to hide their end goal if they know that it would be unpopular. I used to think they had no argument. Now I realize they just don't want to make their argument because they don't wish to reveal who they really are and what they really stand for.

Immigration is being pushed by globalist interests that want to break down the national identity of nations as a prelude to world government. Admitting that would be counter productive, since they know most people don't want that. They know they can't sell that to us. So, quite rationally they will use other tactics. I'm not saying I approve, I think they're scum, but they're not stupid. This post was edited by Zeitgeist at March 25, 2017 1:23 PM MDT

I think that the problem with name calling etc.. is that it shuts down the debate.. it effectively ends it as the other person really can't do anything when the other is just resorting to name calling and no points to address.. In some case, flight or fight that may indeed be a valid tactic... call someone a bunch of names to end the debate.. but in a situation where one is trying to debate.. well it just plain shuts it down.. and looks like the name caller has no reasoned response to offer.. that may be untrue but that's how it looks.
Interesting reply and definitely in the spirit of debate :)

  • Seems like that is your "pat answer" for things you may not fully understand the context. Yes?
