Have you ever trained a pet to do tricks?

What sort of pet? How did you go about it?

This damn cat doesn't take kindly to me trying to teach her pet tricks.

  • Cats are like that, Zack. Uncooperative.

  • My dogs! They do all sort of things, but they are French Bulldogs and they do stuff when they want to.

The all do the obligatory dog stuff like sit, lay, fetch, heel, but they do other things like help bring in firewood (seriously), attack(but it's more like attack and smother with licks), and my boy can actually open the door to go outside. He gets on the end table and pushes the door handle to open the door.  I know this sounds gross....but If I have to leave the house for an extended time (like more than 4-5 hours) and one of them has to pee, they will  run into the shower and pee rather than do it on the floor or the rug. I never have accidents in my house

I once trained a trick to do pets, but the local vice squad shut us down very quickly.

  • Reminds me of an episode of Beverly Hillbillies where Jethro was trying to teach his dog to fetch sticks. When he complained that the dog was stupid, Jed drawled, "Oh, I don't know. He's just taught you to fetch."

I've taught my 4 chorkies to sit*, lay down*, sit pretty*, high five (both hands), shake hands (both), leave it, not yet, stay* (and ONLY come when I call their names), close cupboard doors, turn around* and beg.

    *non-verbal commands as well.

How did I do it?  With patience, treats, praise and a whole lot of repetition.

  • Patience works a treat. So do treats. Work a treat, I mean.

  • How careless of me, Sapphic. Randy D should punish me for the inadvertent innuendo. Of course I meant pets. Mea culpa.

Let's not get Ran-Ran involved. He still thinks restraining order does not count because of misspell. Gah. ;-)

At my parents place we have a staff lab cross ... it's a really smart dog ... it took no time at all to teach it to ignore me.
