So how come LePen's socialist economic policies don't put off right-wingers?

The French have always been heavily socialist, so the fact that right-wingers there don't see a contradiction comes as no surprise. The right-wingers I refer to are the ones in the USA who have been posting on this site that they wanted her to win, despite her having a lot of socialist economic policies that no one at all in the USA puts in their party manifesto. We are talking about people who regard Obamacare as socialist, even though it is private insurance based!

LePen a SOCIALIST? Buy yourself a dictionary, she led the National Front. That's a neo-Nazi organization, some of whose members openly wear swastikas.

You don't know what you're talking about. LePen is a nationalistic democrat. The average American Republican is further right.

Nazism is actually national socialism. There is nothing right wing about it. It violates free market principles completely.

Just because the Nazis support the National Front doesn't make it a Nazi party. American communists vote democrat, but that doesn't make it a communist party. This post was edited by Zeitgeist at May 8, 2017 10:00 PM MDT

  • Actually... American Nazis & White Supremacists vote Republican...Aka Trump the Nazi
The origins of the German Nazi Party started out as Social Democracy, but it morphed into an Authoritarian Fascist regime...Much like Trump is shooting for,  but we Americans are dumb enough to fall for that...Or are we? (wink wink)

Look at all those wonderful Trump supporters

Yes, Nazis vote Republican. Communists vote Democrat. Of course they do... So what? What a meaningless statement...

All sides of the political spectrum have their extremists. The difference is that we disavow ours and left don't disavow theirs.

The left just thinks its sh*t smells sweeter. Communists are just as bad as fascists and in terms of genocide they're much worse.

  • It must have some meaning since you took the opportunity to comment
    Meh...pure hyperbole and vitriol.

I denounce commies...So therefore your statement  is rendered completely fallacious.

The problem is that some people don't know the difference between a socialist, a communist, social-democrat, and democrat which dismisses their opinions as simplistic  blather.  Please try and make a better effort when conversing with me

Real free market policies are just not electable in France. As a nation they're a bunch of leftist lunatics.

LePen did her best to save France. I respect her.

Rejecting a candidate just because they're not ideologically pure is stupid. She did her best with what she had to work with.

Restoring the free market can been done whenever the leftists wake up. Suppressing Islam and the loss of French sovereignty to the E.U. must be done now or it's game over.

  • I'm afraid it most likely is game over for France and the other EU countries.  I agree with you about Le Pen, she did try to save her country and I can't understand why the French did not agree with what she stood for.  More than 230 people killed in terrorist attacks in the past 2 years, immigrants camping out on the streets, relieving themselves on the main streets in Paris in full view of everyone, aggressively begging from tourists rape and violent crime rates have skyrocketed.  I would have thought the average French citizen would want their country back.

Yeah, I'm afraid you might be right. I doubt France can take another 5 years of this. In order to recover France has to get very close to the point of no return, so that people wake up, but not cross it. It requires perfect timing.

The thing the left fear most is social ostracization. They have this strange desperation to prove they are good people to everyone. They constantly virtue signal about how inclusive and tolerant they are. They are more afraid of being smeared as a Nazi by the far left than they are of their country collapsing. The only thing they really care about is their image.

This is a joint response to the majority of comments on this thread. Ms. LePen lead a party that was openly fascist, though since she became leader she tried to steer it in a more moderate direction. France was under Nazi occupation in the war, so, entirely understandably, it has voted for left-wing politics since, and has a heavily socialist leaning. I am not a supporter of socialism, any more than I am of far-right policies, and consider France to be too socialist for my liking. However, under a proportional representation system, such as is used in France, no one party can win enough power to dominate the political direction of the country, so everything is a compromise, and the country can't become socialist, or anything else, beyond a certain point. I don't think you guys understand that being president in France is a mostly ceremonial role, with little real political power. France is not enslaved by the EU, any more than my country was, and while they have certainly had less success in dealing with Islamic terrorists than Britain, the picture you guys are painting of Islamic immigrants is xenophobic bull**it. An Islamic woman saved peoples lives during the attack in the Jewish supermarket. Zeitgeist refers to Ms. LePen as a nationalist democrat, rather than a Nazi, and as I previously stated, she has tried to lead her party in that direction. Whether people trust this conversion on the road to Damascus, I leave to their own judgement. That was not the question I asked. The question was, as her economic policies are socialist, and not the policies of the free market (and I support free-market economics), then why do you right-winghers support her?
