Discussion»Statements»Rosie's Corner» Timing is everything. Could there have been a better time/place for a Trump to emerge? Could he have been a contender? When, where, how?
Personally I wouldn't ever have expected people to vote for such an utter slimeball until the world were about to end.. a time when he couldn't exactly do any good but at that point no one would care anyway and he couldn't make things worse
I believe that's exactly how people felt. The conditions were similar to those in 2008, when President Obama was elected in the wake of the financial crisis and Wall Street meltdown.
Well it's interesting to hear your thought Stu, i have almost heard similar; that and the idea that it was the lesser of two very evils... It's hard for me to truly understand.. I accept that.. all I see is a truly awful man that I cannot imagine people voting for... I do try to understand the reasons.. If it helps I really don't like any of the two main leaders we are supposed to vote for..
I DO remember when Obama was voted in.. everyone thought he would be the answer to all their prayers, like he could almost walk on water.. I *knew* it was unlikely.. that no one could perform the miracles expected of him almost immediately.. I felt people had over-estimated him.. blind faith...
I think the problem is that people expect too much from their heads of state. No president (or prime minister) is powerful enough or has the magic formula to change everyone's lives for the better.
As for Trump, I believe he won partly because Hillary Clinton was a such a flawed and disliked candidate, and that was partly because many folks were tired of the Bushes and Clintons. Jeb Bush faced the same thing in the Republican primary process.
I was disappointed in him but he never scared me. I'd vote for him again if I could. I never thought he was evil and colluding with "the enemy". I knew he wouldn't gut social service programs that help the needy and transfer billions of dollars to the already obscenely wealthy s Trump is wont to do. Trump is a disgrace/disaster dastardly/treasonous. I live for his DAY OF RECKONING! I hope I live that long. My 2cents' worth Addb! :)
Wouldn't it be easier to overdose on something and be done with it? Who could have imagined the reality in which we live today? Even someone with the darkest view of life could not have done it. Thank you for your reply Addb! :)
Trump is a showman. That's what campaigning is all about these days, the media has public opinion in thrall. That and apathy got him in, nobody took him seriously so most of the uncommitted voters stayed home. Couldn't have happened in Australia, voting is compulsory (if you genuinely have a reason for not showing, eg illness, you can get an exemption. If you genuinely detest all of the candidates equally, it's also legal to submit a blank vote and some do).
