What non-religious groups use clothing symbolically?

I just learned that the checkerboard pattern associated with ska culture is a reference to racial unity. Am I the only one who didn't know that? What other random symbols are out there hiding in plain sight?

I didn't know that either but it makes perfect sense now you mention it. In the UK, as you probably already know, it was often called two-tone.. and that too would fit with the racial unity theme. I absolutely adored two-tone :)

Yes! I believe Americans did adopt this from the UK and apparently it's still a thing with some groups. I'm glad I'm not the only one who didn't know. Thank you.:)

    I did not know that.

I've always wondered about the significance of this color and pattern........

Interesting. I just ran a search and Wikipedia says it's often associated with politics, Palestinian Marxists, specifically, among others. Another site said the red and white are only used for special occasions, but didn't elaborate on why. Hopefully someone else will pop in with a better answer. I'm curious now.

I really have wondered about it for a long time, particularly the use of the color red. I've seen it many times over the years.

  • "Bikers" Goth. Steampunk.  Skaters.  Each wears a certain style to show membership in a group, which is a sort of symbolism.
