Why do people prefer to spend tons of money for hourly visits to a nutty shrink when they can spend free time with older wiser persons?

Because older wiser persons have no training in the social skills. A nutty shrink is highly trained.

What we call "academic" was founded in ancient Greece. Akademos was a grove near Athens, sacred to the goddess of wisdom. Membership was by invitation only, and members considered that they owned all knowledge, meaning contributions by outsiders were rejected. That is why PhDs and doctors can be so confident: they are accepted, and everybody else is not. Of course the insiders are not slouches (they had to be good enough to earn an invitation to join), and they are well trained to demonstrate their superiority.
