There are many parts of the world where salt and pepper shakers are not normally placed on tables in homes or restaurants.

In some of those places, salt and pepper shakers for table use don't even exist, because the concept of seasoning a dish at the table does not exist. Oftentimes when I have encountered this, asking the host for salt and/or pepper results in blank stares and confusion, requiring a brief explanation from me as to how or why they're used.

Have you ever ever noticed any of this?
If so, do you come from a culture where it's normal to see salt and pepper shakers on dining tables, or from a culture where it's not normal?

Those parts are probably where food is scarce and seasoning is thought to be bizarre. Food that is bland is ate up just as quickly. This post was edited by O-uknow at December 30, 2017 5:41 PM MST

I don't use them. I have some, but that is because my spouse supplies them.

Is true of my home in E. MA.  We don't even use or have black pepper.

  • "No"  I've never noticed that because I don't use them.
