      Yes, I was in the Boy Scouts until I was 15 years old. I can't remember how old I was when I started, maybe age 8 or 9.

    Boy Scout. Got first class badge (including retesting second class) with actually gaining the second class badge first.

    Had to teach the juniors about birds when I didn't have the foggiest myself.

    No.  I wasn't part of anything that had an associated cost.  My girls were both in scouting in elementary school but stopped around fifth grade to have time for the activities they preferred over it.

    Both. I was a scout until I was about 13, when I got mono and had to give it away for half a year. Never really wanted to go back.
    When my kids got into Scouting, the leader of the local Joeys (the littlest Scouts, 6-7 years old) was about to retire so my wife and I became leaders.
