You've got it all wrong once again. We've merely improved upon it by getting rid of all those weird words and replacing them with logical ones. Oh, and we fixed those soellingspelling errors too. Try to keep up.

America was settled by riff-raff, most of them illiterate. Ergo, the spelling became more phonetic. So was Australia, but we became civilised (sort of) BEFORE we kicked the Brits out (with a vote, not a war), so we learned to spell correctly.
Incidentally, the lowest military officer rank is prounounced "leftenant". A "lootenant" is somebody who rents a lavatory.

Correction: from the time that the first British people left England bound for "The New World" until American English was firmly established in written form, approximately 60 years elapsed. While the majority of those people may have been illiterate, they were not the ones who had a hand in how the evolving language was being recorded. For that reason, illiteracy was neither the sole nor the main impetus for the differences in British English and American English. ~
Sorry Shar, but there is enough Trump topics and comments that I just needed a break and didn't think I needed it on my posts too. You are welcome to talk about anything else you want an here.
