According to a study on Australia suicides...they have stayed steady since 1980. There was a shift in methods from firearms to hanging.

The trend of annual suicide rates from 1980 was relatively stable (around 9–10/100 000) except for a peak in 1997 (around 14.6/100 000).

The 2nd amendment is not going anywhere. Yes, the US has a standing military now....exactly why we have the 2nd....gov has guns= the people have guns. One only need to look into the founders writings to know this.

You do know the government has tanks, and drones, and JSF-35s, right? You're bringing guns to a drone fight, ffs. This post was edited by Slartibartfast at March 24, 2018 12:48 AM MDT

Yes, you know civilians have tanks etc. I know some personally. And if it ever got to that point needed weapons would be taken from the armories. The common soldier is on the peoples side. Sheriff are on the peoples side....some have made it known if the gov bans guns, they are ready to deputize the entire town. Guns are not going anywhere.

Your assaults (40%) and sexual assault (20%) are up as well. Think that has anything to do with disarming victims?

Homicide has decreased by nine percent since 1990 and armed robbery by one-third since 2001, but recorded assaults and sexual assaults have both increased steadily in the past 10 years by over 40 percent and 20 percent respectively. The rate of aggravated assault appears to have contributed to the marked rise in recorded assault, and for both assault and sexual assault the rate of increase was greater for children aged under 15 years, with increases almost double that of the older age group.

Now THAT'S fake news. The crime rate in the US is higher than the UK or Australia, both of whom have no 2nd Amendment and no tyrannical government either.

So you have noticed why Americans need guns while Brits and Ausies don't.

Every time "they" shoot up a school, someone who has never had a gun before buys one.  People are not going to, and should not, give up their guns because crazy people are shooting people.   That would be, well, crazy.

The school where your children go to study gets shot up and you are at home with your guns.....you are at home with your guns ....
What good are you guns then ...plus could you shoot another person in a crowd and be sure of hitting the gunman....
If you miss and shoot/kill  a student do you become a murder to ?

That is why we need to defend our schools....that is why there are school resource officers there.

this school wasn't shot up as bad as it could have been...the shooter was stopped almost as soon as he started....when HE was shot dead. Only way to stop this crap is to quit making schools such soft targets.

Or make possession of semiautomatic weapons a felony, and require all guns to be registered and gun owners to be licensed. A valid reason must be stated for purchase ('protection' explicitly excluded as not being a valid reason - protection from WHAT?). That's the situation in Australia. We haven't had a single mass shooting in 22 years.

Maryland makes it tough to buy guns....this kid didn't buy it. still waiting to hear how he got possession of it. I'm just glad that the resource officer did his job and stopped the gunman.

The school had a resource officer (deputy sheriff).  He confronted the shooter immediately.  That is what should have happened at Parkland.

Nope....a school shooting being a person comes to the school to shoot students/faculty: 10 for the year adding this one....12 weeks.

Everytown's raw data is useful and important - and three of Snopes' "disambiguations" involved "stray bullets from unknown sources", any or all of which may have been intentional. 17 times this year a firearm has been discharged on school grounds, a place where no firearm should ever be (the eighteenth was a school which had closed down, so I discounted that one).

What we generally call a school shooting is a person coming to the school with the intention to shoot faculty/students.
A person commiting suicide in the parking lot of a school is not a school shooting. A accidental discharge of a weapon is not a school shooting etc.
Yes, the raw data is important it shows that they are inflating the numbers when they say 18 school shootings for purposes of antigun propaganda.
