  • I remember being really interested in Kyrgyzstan. The more obscure a country was, the more interested in it I was.

Santa Monica. I thought that name just sounded magical. And yes, it was a foreign country to me. They had TELEVISIONS there!

Japan has always kind of fascinated me. My dad lived there for about a year and would tell me stories of the people and the culture. I like how vastly different it is from my own culture and I definitely plan on visiting one day.

Was your fascination based primarily on the name of the country?

I think so. It sounded kind of mystical and exotic/distant to me.

  • I hope you do manage to visit some day! I've been there many times and will be going back this summer to visit my mom's family.

I've been to Japan many times.  Was your fascination as a child based primarily on the name of the country, as I asked in the original post?

  • My fascination was based primarily on my Japanese heritage, though I did notice how my mom would call it "Nihon" and I didn't understand how they got "Japan" from "Nihon" (it was only later that I researched the origin of the name).

Oh it'll happen soon, I think. Already putting money aside for it. I think it will be a graduation gift to myself. :P
