Someone you know, who used drugs, alcohol and tobacco much of his/her life, suddenly and successfully stops using all of them.

The next thing you know he/she is bashing and lecturing everyone who still uses. Hypocrisy at its finest?

  • When it comes to hypocrisy we are all hypocrites, and not limited to chemical dependency.

I did not care much for this one guy who always liked to say "if I can do it then you can do it"
'Take a hike guy,  everybody is different.

Yes, I have seen this.  It's a huge battle to win, so I cut them a little slack with the hypocrisy.  Maybe they really believe that if THEY could do it, so could anyone else.  Anyone pointing fingers is likely still suffering from self esteem issues.  I have met people that gave it all up and they have enormous compassion.  Some of them go on to be sponsors or counselors in the field.

We call it the "none so holy as the newly saved" syndrome.

AKA "the enthusiasm of the newly converted."

Actually, I have never been exposed to such people---just lucky I guess.

Yes I do, and my hypocritical ex hard drug user alky sister (who still smokes weed all day with breathing oxygen from a machine) can't wait to tell me I drink too much. Long story.

  • Thank you for shedding a little light onto the reasoning for your question.  Man, that's really tough.  I wish the both of you well.

I must be an idiot---How could I have though that some of these answers were actually the product of sentient beings with their intellect cathected?

Not quite. It's hypocrisy if they still do it in secret. Otherwise it's annoying but not hypocritical.
I do it sometimes, when my daughter ***** about being broke. I quit for financial reasons, tobacco is taxed up the wazoo in Australia. This post was edited by my2cents at April 5, 2018 11:25 AM MDT

This is what an addict does to stay an addict.

They have conversations with themselves trying to explain to themselves why it is useless to quit because you are only going to be more miserable and that is why you drink.

No.  This is a disease.  I have been through it.  I drank heavily for 25 years. I earned my stripes.    I tell you I fell and got back up and fell and got back up and fell and realized that my way was not working. Because being sober was EVERYTHING.  I never wanted to go back to that life.  EVER.

There is nothing for a drunk, or an addict except a future of hell.  So, you might as well try another tactic and get some help.  You are not unique.  YOU CANNOT EVER DO THIS ALONE.  I know you have insurance. Get some assistance.  It can be a month away from everyone to re-learn why you are just ****** yourself into staying the same. That is the disease working on your mind.

There are TOOLS to make the transition from addict to sober person that are so pleasant you won't believe it.  Vitamins that support the nerves, exercise and people who have been through it to talk to about it.

You can rot in your own misery and we all will love you anyway, because, frankly, I cannot tell at all. I just listen to my friend and do more than offer advice.  I push advice because no one else will bother.

Take control of the rest of your life and try getting a book for starters.  Something.

And please don't bore me about what you have tried so far.  You didn't do it right and you probably didn't do it at all.
