I grew up in a little town surrounded by a reservation. The tribe was called "Yumas", a misspelling of Spanish humos, "smokes". A significant event in the tribe's history was when they agreed to go to war in support of another tribe. Well, the other tribe didn't show up, so the Yumas were wiped out, leaving only the males who were too stupid or crippled or otherwise unfit to fight.
I went to school with the children of those males. They are now into the third generation after the catastrophe, so they are starting to act sort of normal, but the first and second generations were rather hard to put up with. I avoided learning even a single word of their language.
I like the romance languages. Most all the others have a much harsher sound (German, Russian, Polish) and the Asian languages (Chinese, Korean) have that sing-song sound which is irritating to my ear.
I have studied, briefly, Latin, French, Spanish, German, Chinese and Japanese, and never got fluent because I never met anybody who couldn't speak English. Latin is the most useful language because it is still used in law and many of the sciences. You are more likely to meet someone in the USA who speaks Latin than any other foreign language.
I recently learned that Queens, NY is home to 138 native languages, but all those people speak English outside the home.
The first 13 weeks of Chinese are devoted to learning how to draw the characters. You don't learn a single word. I took another class where I learned 200 words and still had no clue about how to form a sentence.
Arabic is so hard that even famous orators can't get it right all the time.
