No, and state law has crippled locals to make it so. When I lived in Washington it was illegal to smoke within so many feet of a door or window of a residential or commercial building. It was against the law to stand on the street and smoke but it was OK as long as you were walking. Crazy!!
This is the subject that the country went completely and utterly overboard about. The movement was started by the pharmacy companies because they had a product with no market. I'm not saying smoking is or isn't a good idea, but we live in a free country. The worst ban I know of is when people can't smoke in their homes. I think that's ridiculous. When I lived up in the NW there was no smoking allowed in the apartment building where I lived. People even prohibited it in rental houses. I think that's over the line. Sure, charge a tenant $500 cleaning fee to pay to have walls washed down when they move. But to disallow a legal activity in your own home is too much. I don't smoke. Here in Florida the state provides quit-smoking drugs for free.
I agree. The scary thing is , is this country is slowly chipping away at our freedoms, and one day, if we are not careful, we will no longer be enjoying the luxury of true freedom.
In my condo we eliminated smoking because it was impossible to keep the smoke from infiltrating the hallways and other apartments. It became a huge issue. We felt that the right of the majority to breathe was more important than keeping a few smokers happy.
It was the resident/owners who wanted it. We 'grandfathered in' the current smokers. The smoke really was a problem in our building and that may have not been true in a building with a different ventilating system. If the smoke could have been contained within a unit, then I would not have been in favor of it and would be in agreement with you.
Weird - something is free in America that Australians have to pay for. You can get them cheap on prescription - once. After that if you still need them, they're expensive. Still cheaper than cigs (which are a ridiculous price in Australia That's why I quit, it had nothing to do with my health).
