It does get confusing....the word Jew is used for the religious and cultural followers (both born into through their Mother and converted), those who can trace their line to the tribe of Judah, and those from Israel. Not just race/ancestry.

Oh...all these years and I didn't know that. So am I. DNA takes us back to the Ashkenazi Jews. A cousin traced our grandmother's lineage back to the 1870s in Russia.
Maybe we are cousins. I'm from the Bllumenthal clan. (Maternal Grandmother.) She married a Goldstein, also from Russia. He changed his name to Davis because of discrimination.
I think it does mean that but then again I also think that because my Blood brother is a Hereditary Chief I'm next in line if he dies before me. Cheers!
It certainly means 1/16 of your blood line is Jewish. There will be a high probability particularly in the 3rd and 4th generations back of your ancestors in the given line marrying fellow Jews, although if you're not a Jew then possibly there may not be much Jewish blood on your father's side. 50% could be close to the best estimate.
My fathers side are all Irish Catholics. I might do the dna test when I can afford it to find out for certain. My aunt has done a family tree but she’s not sharing it. She’s using it to wind everyone up I think.
Again Irish Catholics and others (sc Protestants) were not known for intermarrying. If they did, they could be driven out of the country. My uncle gave up a perfectly good Catholic lassie on this account.
I am wondering if this is a trick question? I always seem to fall for them! I'd say... it would depend also on what your father's heritage is, and whether you practice the religion or not.
I’d like to know for sure. I’m going to do a dna test. My auntie has done a complete family tree. I asked my mother to ask her for it over a year ago and she seems reluctant to hand it over. It’s quite annoying.
In terms of bloodline ancestry, yes, you are Jewish to the 1/16th.
In terms of the Jewish community, they would not consider you a Jew because they go by the ethnicity of the Mother....if Mom is Jewish then her children are considered Jewish. (Mama's baby, Daddy's maybe) It actually stems from a period of time when the Jews were in capitivy and there was alot of rape going on.
