This "ruled from thousands of miles away by strangers" just described modern America, though.  LOL

I think the Queen would have a sense of humor about it.

Right and righty right.  They could be taxing us up the wazoo and be the wealthiest country on earth right now, if only.

Sorry but it really was a very, very, very long time ago and we are happy for you.. You have to remember that in history there were Brits who were arguing for America to be independent even before the war.. we stood no chance in that war but I think that there were a lot of Brits on the side of it's time to release our fledglings

Here in the UK we tend not to be so worshipful of money, it's really not the most important thing but it's not like we are a poor country, and it's not like you guys are the wealthiest either..

I was being facetious about taxation without representation which was the reported cause for the revolution.  And, by the way, I may have said this already but I am 65% British according to AncestryDNA.  I am really looking forward to my trip to "The Old Country!"

I'm not sure they would throw an elaborate tea party about the whole situation; however, they might brew over it for a moment or two. This post was edited by Merlin at July 3, 2018 8:52 PM MDT

Do you know..... we hear the word tea party but almost none of us have a clue what it's about... I do get that it's very important to Americans and I respect it's important to them - but it's not a word or phrase that comes up here.

I think the "Tea Party" was when colonists threw casks of tea, imported from England, into Boston Harbor because the taxes on them had been raised, they felt, to an unreasonably high level.  Hence the phrase, "Taxation without representation."   Someone may correct me if I'm wrong.  I learned about this 50 or more years ago. Hi CallMelshmael~ You are so right and that was the exact idea I was playing with!!!   It didn't happen on the 4th of July.  That took place on December 16th, 1773.  I was trying to use a play on words and events that included England and American History.  I was thinking of a way they might pass the day tomorrow and a tea party was what came to mind.
Thanks CallMelshmael!  I'm glad you got the notion and knew your history!

Mostly we don't even think of it.. it's not something that we think about.. remembering we lost or gave back, (quite rightly too) a lot of territory... Most of us are happy that you are happy, we think it's kinda cute that you celebrate so enthusiastically.. Some of us have our own American themed parties to celebrate with you

Even though the U.K. doesn't have its own Independence Day to celebrate, is there an equivalent or near-equivalent commemoration over there across the pond, Day?

I am told that the English refer to that episode as "Presbyterian Rebellion" and they place the blame squarely on John Calvin even though he had been dead for over 200 years. Any way you look at it, this country was founded by religious nuts with guns.

Very true......but don't you think stolen rather then founded......The French ,English and Dutch were very good at doing things like that... I bet our government and the royals still miss doing it....:(

No, they did not steal it. The eastern seaboard was depopulated by an epidemic shortly before the colonists arrived, so the land was up for grabs.
