Me too. It was a really hard time for the country as a whole. The United States would not be as we know it today and as our forefathers perceived it from the beginning.
I'd say FDR ... despite being having polio, he overcame the stigma associated with being handicapped at the time and led the nation out of the Great Depression and through World War 2.
How could it be anyone but FDR? He was disabled by polio, which both limited his physical ability AND made him part of a minority group - the only president other than Obama who could claim that.
I believe the answer could easily be someone other than FDR or Obama. I watched Hyde Park on the Hudson last night on Netflix. Hummm. It is the first film I've watched with Laura Linney that I didn't really like. I really did enjoy the Royals, Bertie and Elizabeth though. I'll never fail to think about them whenever I see a hotdog.
If you know anyone who is disabled and what life is like for them, and the latent discrimination they suffer, I don't see how you could pick anyone other than FDR for this answer.
FDR. Led the country through TWO disasters, neither of his making, despite being crippled by polio and dealing with the stigma attached to disabilities at the time (he was very rarely photographed in his wheelchair).
Rode in on the coattails of Obama's economic recovery and the country isn't at war, despite his constant attempts to start one. Born to privilege and any health problems he may have are of his own making. How in HELL does he have it harder than Franklin Roosevelt?
