I don't do much of it. If I think something costs too much I say what I am willing to pay and walk away. Few items are available from only one merchant. I'm actually a skilled negotiator but in the marketplace I prefer to feel that the price on a tag is the only price they will accept. I wish cars were sold this way.
Me too! We just went to pick Don's car up from the Mazada dealership after a tune-up/oil change. Even then, they tried to snag an extra 28 bucks out of us. Ugh! :(
Depending on what it is, sometimes I play the "I can find an excuse as to why we need this" card. I don't do it very often because I do not like clutter. But, every now and again, I talk myself into it even if it is a bit expensive. As a general rule, though, I walk away, too.

Seriously no.. I prefer not to.. I mean I can but us Brits are known not to like haggling.. we prefer to just pay the price asked ... It's not that we can't haggle but we prefer not to.. I think it's an extreme form of ultra politeness gone wrong
I wouldn't say I like it. For big-ticket items, I usually say something like 'do you know when this will be going on sale?' or 'this is a little more than I can pay, can you do any better?'. I am never pushy and I have found that sales people who actually have the authority to give discounts don't need much encouragement.
I don't haggle. The most I will do is ask if the business does a local discount.
I have a business and get asked all day long to give people discounts. I do have the discount built into my price. I will do the local, senior, military, multi-purchase discount etc. But it is a set % and some don't this it is enough. I just make it a joke and say that is all I can do. Have had a few offer $50 for a $100 item. I would rather they just leave but still have to be nice. And they usually price around and end up coming back to me.
I do wonder how some of these people are able to shop at stores like Walmart etc.
I really don't like haggling....we've had yard sales/garage sales and sell things really cheap. For instance, mismatched cups or glasses and you put 50 cents each on them. You KNOW someone is going to ask "Will you take a quarter for these three?" I mean, SERIOUSLY????? I always say that if that keeps happening, we should just take it all to Goodwill or some resale shop. Then they'll have to go in there and pay $2-$3 each for them. And even if you post signs around that say "No Haggling" that never stops anyone from trying to get it for nothing.
I have haggled yes, but many sales people, including management don't realise that the deal is done at the till point, not at the pricing. Sometimes it's worth it.
