When you get a compliment, do you believe it?

"Sure" ... sometimes you have to go along to get along.  :))

Of course, nice of them to notice.

I find it's rare for people to make personal comments at all, complementary or otherwise.
I wonder sometimes whether people abstain from comments because they think it's too personal and hence rude.

In some circles, such as NVC and among many psychologists, praise and criticism are considered manipulative -
compliments are flattery, the prelude to asking for or selling something,
and criticisms are ways of trying to control others.

On the other hand, marriage counsellors and relationship experts say that praise is an essential means of fostering good relationships.

Beats me to know what's right.

I can make guesses about what others think of me from body language or behaviour - but I can never know for sure.

I would actually very much like to know what others think.

Depends on the context, who's saying it, and how well they know me.

From a salesperson - never.

From someone with greater skills, knowledge and experience, I feel an unalloyed thrill of hope and encouragement.

From a friend, I feel love and gratitude -
but though I have quite a few friends, compliments and personal comments of any sort are rare.

I like to give compliments whenever a pleasant thought or reaction arises.

I withhold criticisms unless specifically asked about a particular incident or behaviour, and then try to keep it objective and constructive.

Hmm, perhaps I should ask my friends for feedback.

Appreciate them? Sure. Believe them? Not necessarily.
I’m secure enough with myself that such pleasantries carry little weight.

I accept them if I feel they're true.
