Never understood why people found him amusing.  And he was on for years.  Perhaps I was too young for his brand of humor.  Which I always thought OK this is supposed to be funny?

  • I don't believe that late night talk shows were suppose to be just about humor.  There were also special celebrity guests talking about their latest work, schedule or situation. I'm not an authority on the subject because I always worked the night shift and can't really tell you much about any of them, but I do know the reputation of Mr. Carson and it appears that the AM membership does too.

In regards to humor, there are many styles/types of humor and I don't think I've ever met anyone that liked them all.  I know I don't.  I'm sure you realize that a comedian has to consider his/her audience. A late night show's audience would be mostly adults, so the humor would be of adult style or nature.  You did say that you were "too young" ... they expected you to be in bed.

None of the current ones. They’re all pretty much the same.

I must admit that I can't stay up that late these days unless I have no work the following day, but Stephen Colbert would be my pick.  Of course, no one comes close to Johnny Carson whose I stayed up for all the time.

Jimmy Fallon used to be funny until he got political like all the rest.  It's the reason I don't watch any of the award shows.  What Hollywood doesn't they all have become one big activist turn-off.  They have aligned themselves with the violent left.  We all are watching the decline of Hollywood and what it used to stand for.

Exactly. By the time I was old enough to stay up and watch them the great ones were gone. When I want to watch comedy and/or late night shows I don’t want to hear about politics regardless of their beliefs. That’s what the news is for.       (show's shows)

Plural noun, not possessive singular noun.

I always tape Steven Colbert for his monologue.  He's one hour of the five shows I tape weekdays.  No time for anyone else.

Good one.  No one else caught that.  Because of spell check and calculators my spelling and arithmetic are going downhill. Or is it old age?

      (Whose Who's)

It's a contraction of who + is or who + has.

  • Steve Allen, although he was a little before my time, and of course the one, the only Johnny Carson.

Certainly no one right now. Back in the day, Johnny Carson was king.

Whenever I used to watch his program, which was not often, I always felt I had wandered into some kind of private club where everyone seemed to be having a great time but I never got the joke.

Have much better things to do late night than listen to talk shows.  Like sleeping.
