I was born in the Detroit suburb of Highland Park Nanoose. Moved to California when I was 3. My uncle was a cop on the Detroit police force. We left Michigan for California in 1940 so we weren't there then. That must have been very scary for you. How old were you? Thank you for your reply and Happy Thursday!  :)

I was around 8 and it was very scary until a black lady got in front of us  and let people know they would have to get past her first.  That was a turning point in my life because I took a step towards growing up and not being a racist like most of the crackers in my family so I got no regret about that day.  Cheers!

My sister was there, too. She got robbed while calling mom from a phone booth. I could hear her screaming.

Ya it was horrible day for such a great city -  Detroit was my second home there were lots of fun things to do. It would probably break my heart to see it these days. Gordon Lightfoot wrote a cool song about the riot called Black Day In July. Cheers!

  • The most terrifying memory is when I was 5 yrs old.  I was on my bed looking at pictures in a fairytale book. It had been raining, lots of thunder and lightening.  My brother was upstairs too, so I wasn't alone.  Suddenly the house started to shake and move and I heard Mom and Dad downstairs telling us to come downstairs. My brother ran down the stairs but I was frozen in fear on my bed.  Finally Dad realized I hadn't come down and came up to fetch me, carrying me under his arm like a football. lol.  By the time we reached the basement it stopped.  Looking out the front door our big front porch was gone!  Live electric wires were laying in the middle of the street. A tornado had come down our street and caused lots of damage, even lifting a house off its foundation up the street. After that every time we had a storm, with loud thunder and wind rattling the windows I was near hysterical.  Worst scare of my life! Were tornadoes common or rare where you lived Cinders? I thought you were going to say you were experiencing an earthquake. Tornadoes are the things that manifest themselves as big black funndels and they are very powerful and very deadly. There isn't much we can do when Mother Nature is energetic but just try to survive! Thank you for your reply and Happy Thursday! :)

  • Yes tornadoes occur in my area anytime of the year!  Last February a tornado blew my storm door completely off my house!  There have been more of them in the last ten years than years before. So funnel clouds are seen in my area at least a couple times a year!

Whoa. So at anytime you could be hit by one? Well as a Californian we know at any time an earthquake can occur. We've been waiting for THE BIG ONE which is overdue apparently. How big that will be I dunno but I think at least as big as the one in San Francisco that destroyed the city. Thank you for your reply Cinders! :) This post was edited by RosieG at November 2, 2018 7:09 AM MDT

Seeing Watership Down. I'm still trying to figure out in what universe this was supposed to be a kids' movie.

It seems vaguely familiar Sbf but I thought it was a board game. Oh. I guess I"m thinking of Battleship or something like that. I'm gonna Google it and see what it was about. Thank you for your reply and Happy Thursday! :) Geez Sbf I just got back from checking it out! It sounds very scary to this ADULT. It's  allegedly for kids? To do what? Scare the daylights outta them? I saw movie once I could never figure out. I forget the name but I think John Goodman was in it. It had to do with being in a hotel somewhere and the walls were on fire. I think the actor John Turturro was in it as well. It was undoubtedly allegorical but I couldn't make heads nor tails of it unless the whole thing happened in He**. I think I did not miss having knowledge of Watership Down as a child. It is very dark and doomy gloomy and scary. SIGH. So is life. Maybe the point is to prepare kids for their terrifying future? This post was edited by RosieG at November 1, 2018 7:41 AM MDT

  • Driving home from my brother's soccer practice. I was about 12 years old.  My dad hit a kid on a bike (thankfully a cop witnessed it and it was determined to be the boy's fault), I will never forget the sound of the kid hitting the grill of my dad's truck. It seemed as if the kid was flying up in the air in slow motion, and then the sound of his head hitting the curb.  My dad was never the same about driving after that.  While the cop was talking to my dad, my brother and I were waiting in the cab of the truck, and a couple approached my dad while opening the door, and telling him that they will drive us home.  That too was scary to me, because for that moment I worried that my dad would be too upset to think clearly and actually allow them to drive us "home".  Even as a 12 year old, the vibes I picked up from them were creepy, and thankfully my dad told them no and they disappeared.     The boy's parents were poor, so they attempted to sue my parents, but because it was the kid's fault, nothing came of that fortunately.
