How did beverage companies convince us we needed bottled water when most of us have clean tap water?

What was the pivotal shift where people agreed to pay for something they were getting free/ cheap?

  • That sounds like Lawrence Massachusettes. I recall visiting a friend way back and helping myself to a glass of tap water.
    1) No tap water should be taht color
    2) Tape water should not look like a Sea Monkey kingdom...or smell like one

I swear is smelled like a waste-treatment plant, but those poor people were all nose-blind

You do get used to it. When I first moved to Adelaide from Sydney, I could swear there was a swimming pool in the near vicinity due to the smell of chlorine in the tap water. I don't notice it now. It's okay for washing and bathing, but prefer not to drink it unfiltered.

  • I do have to admit we have some of the best tasting tap water.  It originates from wells rather than being pumped out of a sewage-ridden river.  The whole process is cleaner.  I don't buy bottled water when I can refill gallon jugs and stick 'em in a cooler if I'm going to be away from a clean water source for a prolonged period.

It isn't necessarily the water that is a problem but the pipes.  Older houses have lead in the pipe system, plus many are filthy.  The entire system that brings water into your home may have serious problems.  New York for example has a very old underground system that is a big problem.
Water transportation systems don't last forever but nothing is done unless there is a failure somewhere.  Flint Michigan is a good example.  All those people who drank lead contiminated water, oh my gosh, I really feel for them.  What a horrible thing to live with.
All the hormones in our water isn't doing anyone any good as well.

I still drink tap water directly from the faucet. I always have and I'm still kicking. I don't like using bottled water because I'm trying to avoid using plastic so much and its unnecessary since I can just get water from the faucet. Also, bottled water always tasted kinda funky to me, maybe I'm just not used to it?

Don't you put it in a cup or glass first?

I only buy water if tap is not available.
I believe there was a report from the ADA that said bottled is bad for your teeth because it has no fluoride in it.

It is good for our teeth. I grew up on fluorinated water....no stomach problems and no cavities until I moved.

Yeah, cavities reduce when water is fluoridated. There's little debate on that. But, the question comes in with how much is a safe level. At certain levels, it does become toxic, though the major concern is not stomach issues, but neurological issues. There's a great big gray area and we genuinely don't know how much a person can have before they do start to have issues. Conspiracy theorists will tell you that the fluoride is being intentionally used to dumb down the population and make people infertile. I don't take it to such extremes, but I do have concerns over the practice. Bottled water isn't "bad" because it doesn't contain fluoride, but it doesn't afford the same protections.

Many New Agers and hippies decided the fluoride and chlorine added to tap water was bad for health. Then it just caught on.

But the crazy thing is, if the water is put in a glass jug and left in the sun for 24 hours all the chlorine is destroyed - cheap and easy. This post was edited by inky at November 3, 2018 12:15 PM MDT

I was going to ask where the questioner lived that they were privy to clean tap water.

    ARE YOU INSANE, JA?

    ARE YOU?

Please get thee to a filter.  We, of all areas, do not have clean tap water.  It is loaded with the most horrific calcified garbage.

Leave a glass of water out and let it evaporate.  Look at the glass.  Look at the stuff.  That is not in the bottled water.

I got sick of buying bottled water.  I bought one of those Britta water filters and keep a jug in my fridge.

But never would I drink straight from the tap.  That stays in your body and joints.

  • What Sharonna said about the calcium content made a lot sense, to me.  If it builds up in joints like it has in my shower I can see where it would build up, fatten the joints, pinching nerves, and stiffening/limiting extending/retracting of muscles.  Like I said, just pondering.  Oh, and for your information, I use dual tablets in my toilet tank now, thank you very much. :P This post was edited by Benedict Arnold at November 3, 2018 7:14 AM MDT

My references: 20 years teaching chemistry...ex wife: Chief chemist, Toledo water plant.
If what you say is true, then you better not use antacids or eat cheese or drink milk. It does build up in pipes, though.

  • I didn't say it was true.  It just made me wonder, and even marvel that Sharonna might have accidentally came up with the cause of a world-wide dis-ease, possibly leading to research that results a cure.

It's good for digestion. Plain cider vinegar works, too, but pickle juice tastes better.
