I don't know anyone my age who hasn't. They used to play it backwards on radio stations quite often back in the day, and claim evil verses, which is incredibly silly.
Jimmy Page was a disciple of Satanist/Order of The Golden Dawn Member/White Brotherhood member and 33rd degree freemason Aleister/Edward Crowley who taught the Occult law of reversal and identified himself as The Beast 666, and engaged in invocations and ritual black magic, so I'm not surprised.
Ever noticed the "So Smote be it" on side 1?

By his own admission he is still into Magick and still into the occult. He never disparaged those days, he has fond memories especially of those members in the Golden Dawn.
Same as David Bowie, he followed Crowley, however he did speak of regrets, but still brought out the Lazarus Album and the song Blackstar which is linked to the star sirius. he two always followed kabbalah like Crowley and many of his predecessors, going right back and further to extremely influential figures throughout history, including Francis Bacon, John Dee, Isaac Newton, Aldous Huxley, the list is long, they were all occultists and many claimed to be in communication with other spirits and it was that just as Alfred Russell Wallace (the lesser known evolution theorist) who said that man's evolution has been controlled by spiritual interference.
Even Kabbalah could be linked the angel Raziel (keeper of the secrets and mysteries), now Raziel/kokabiel in some cases was said to bring "knowledge" to mankind, however he is also listed as a fallen angel. The New Age Religion is from a history of channelling, same as method actors claim to channel, and the Lucis Trust supported by the United Nations is the new but old religion now coming out in the open, but Alice Bailey was influenced not only by her freemason husband but by Madam Blavatsky and what she believed is worth reading because even David Bowie was professing some of the things she said.

Oh, here's to my sweet Satan The one whose little path would make me sad Whose power is Satan He'll give those with him 666 There was a little toolshed where he made us suffer Sad Satan
Coincidence possibly. Given how much acid Jimmy was melting his brain with back then, much of Zep's material didn't make a lot of sense forwards or backwards.
