All cultures go through phases of variation in their moral values if you examine the records over a long enough span of time.
In the case of cultures upholding the Semitic religions, homosexuality has always flourished in secrecy.
For instance, in ancient Greek culture, especially Athens, homosexual love was considered superior to heterosexual because women were perceived as owned chattels. Except for the hetera (the highest class of trained prostitute-entertainers), no women had an education. Among the educated gentry, a male lover could be either an equal in age, or a young boy student of great beauty.
In Ancient Roman culture, the mores varied but in the later epochs homosexuality, androgyny and intersexual variables were well understood.
Some cultures had other ways of giving socially acceptable roles to people with innate sexual difference: Some Pacific Islands with a high genetic incidence of androgeny allow men-women to act as childless aunties in helping to raise their children. The cultures are Christian, and as long as the aunties remain celibate, they are treated and accepted as women. In India, the Nautch dancers can be cross-dressers, homsexuals and/or transexuals - they are musicians and dancers performing the classical religious ragas and dramas at the highest levels of the culture - and they've done so for over 2,000 years.
The basic impulses remain the same - all that varies is which behaviours are publically permitted and how authorities and the majority of average citizens respond to the breaches of social norms.
One statistic from metastudies in sociology shows that the more sexually repressive a culture is, the higher its incidence of violence and murder.
Everything began to crumble when apostrophes were left out and extra periods were added before question marks. The entire universe is now off line, grrrrrrr. ~
Societies have become more accepting and less judgmental of morality - principles concerning the distinction between right and wrong or good and bad behavior.
“Vice is a monster of so frightful mien As to be hated needs but to be seen; Yet seen too oft, familiar with her face, We first endure, then pity, then embrace.” ― Alexander Pope
The USA is collapsing, and some other nations too. All cultures eventually collapse if they don't get conquered first. Symptoms might include a big drop in quality of entertainment, adopting a new major religion, rejecting traditional standards of morality and excellence of all kinds, closing the borders to immigrants at the same time basic service jobs are taken over by immigrants because citizens refuse to do them, debunking national heroes and admiring slobs instead, hiring mercenaries because citizens refuse to serve, and on and on.
