Nothing, wood has a purpose. It's soft but not brittle. Hard and not ridged. Can carry the load and bend but not break. Every element such as wood, metal and so on has a purpose in design.
In Florida, residential construction studs. Most homes are now built with concrete block but those that aren't should be built using such key points in the commercial building code. The single home that survived, and with very little damage, out of a whole neighborhood during Hurricane Matthew in the panhandle was built using upgraded requirements from the commercial code. My opinion.
