Surprise: Gun ownership rises to 44% of all homes

After a steady decline in gun ownership in recent years, more homes are reporting having a weapon inside, according to a new survey.

Pew Research Center, in a poll on guns released Friday, showed that 44 percent of the country has a gun in the house. Some 51 percent don't.

The more I hear this "denying access to law abiding citizens", the more phony it sounds. Every citizen is law abiding, until they're not.

  • Again...I asked you a question and you ignored it...

Are you saying that it is OK for Criminals, Terrorists, and the mentally disturbed to have access to firearms?

Denying these people guns is gun control. You are saying gun control is bad.

So...Is it bad to deny Criminals, Terrorists, and the mentally disturbed access to firearms?

  • Yeah, we have a gun lobby here too, mostly hunting enthusiasts who want the game seasons and legal targets extended.

They don't kill for food, btw. Some sell carcasses to the pet meat trade -which I don't object to because feral animals can destroy our fragile environment very quickly. But most kill for the pleasure of it. I've spoken with a few and watched others interviewed in documentaries. Nothing thrills them more than the rush of killing an animal, especially if its trying to escape.

Among them are a minute percentage of dubious types - neo-nazis who promote racial bigotry and violence - clandestine most of the time - but enough get caught that we know they exist.

  • But if he backed it up, wouldn't that put a damper on the conversation?

  • Mmm - I liked your first argument better, although I had to go looking up what those acronyms stood for.

In your second response, who are you quoting? I don't much enjoy quotes of that sort because attacking the arguer does not win the argument.

I would be interested to hear how you might answer Nimitz's questions, since they are fair to the debate, whether we agree with his view or not.

  • Ad hominem, Nimitz? I get that you are giving tit for tat, and that you mean it jokingly. Do you feel that there's no point in arguing?

Sure, when the argument isn't an obvious attempt at flamebaiting. We argue all the time--we seldom take the same stance on anything--yet you seem to find a civil way to respond.  That's all I ask...from them, from you and, yes, from me.

    I'd say you're right.

That, and I'm highly selective about the trolls I choose to feed. I decide when they eat, how much they eat, and what kind of food to give them.  I'm just magnanimous that way. :-)
