  • Brand  new means new, unused, and in the box.

New just means new to me. "I get a new oven from the garage sale."  ( new to me) as opposed to " I got a brand new toaster oven from Target. ( new directly  from the brand's factory)

New is something fresh and recent. Brand New is an indie rock band.

Brand new is bought directly from the store very recently. (First owner)

New is bought recently...may or may not be the first owner.

I work in the vicinity of the Toledo Jeep factory. Every day I see the 'Jeep Patrol' out and about with testers driving brand new Jeeps. They put a few miles on each Jeep as they deliver them to various storage lots around the Jeep plant. Although the testers at Jeep drive carefully and do not abuse the new Jeeps, you could question if they are 'brand new'.
