The oldest joke on record: "a bride should not fart while sitting on her husband's lap". Do you think it's funny?

Or has it gotten stale over the last 5 or 6 thousand years?

How or why would anyone assume that it’s “the oldest joke on record”?  Humor existed long before the concept of marriage came about, so other types of jokes would have preceded this one.

No, I don’t think it’s funny, I don’t even understand it. Any “joke“ that needs to be explained isn’t funny, and by extension isn’t a joke.

Some people find certain things to be funny and others do not. We are each entitled to determine for ourselves what is or is not funny.

When you refer to recorded history, please cite your source. I am doubtful that this quip you’ve found is the first recorded joke ever, but I am willing to admit that I am wrong if proven otherwise.

Not to get into the schematics of the question, I thought it was funny and good advice.  It goes hand-in-hand with all good tips needed on a first date and when you are on your honeymoon.

Miss Manners would definitely approve and so would my Grammie!

*I read it to Don and he got a chuckle out of it, too! :) :) This post was edited by Merlin at October 27, 2019 11:34 PM MDT

Are you Italian?  I ask because almost all of my Italian friends who have grandchildren are know to them as "Grammie."

I'm not sure.  There may be some Italian in me.  To the best of my knowledge, I'm your "run of the mill," mutt.  That probably makes me a true American. :)
It's been so long, I'm not super positive but pretty positive.  I started calling her Grammie because my older sister called her Grams and I didn't want her to get us mixed up... especially when we talked on the phone.
    I don't remember how old I was but I pray I wasn't any older than 5.
    Big Smiles.
    Thanks for asking! :) :)

I don't think it's terribly funny. My wife and I were just discussing this, and we agreed that if two people truly love each other, then farting is no big deal.

You left part of it out:

Academics have compiled a list of the most ancient gags and the oldest, harking back to 1900BC, is a Sumerian proverb from what is now southern Iraq.

"Something which has never occurred since time immemorial; a young woman did not fart in her husband's lap," goes the joke.

Still I think it may need more context....

Could be....I do not know. That is where knowing the culture etc helps put things into context.
I could be way off or completely correct. Can't really get into it here.

I find it to be words of wisdom from women who would like to feel "womanly" and desired.
What made it funny for me was the visual I drew from it!

Maybe a bride should not fart while sitting on her husband's lap should be written into marriage vows.  This is drifting off topic but I save my farts for bath time then when I play torpedo the Bismarck I can make bubbles and bubbly sounds as she is sinking. Cheers!

    Big Giggles with Bubbles!!
I do agree that some gals might truly benefit from those wise words to be written in their wedding vows!!

I must ask.  Is it the smell of your saved farts that sink the Bismarck or the velocity of the torpedos sent that sinks it?

On the same topic, for us, we save our farts when we bathe together because we can't afford a jacuzzi!

It can be quite a bubbly time depending on what we had for dinner.  ;) :)

To the extent that it reminds me of how embarrassing that would probably be, it is amusing to me, but it is a normal bodily function with unpleasant side effects on the body if it is eliminated by the individual.
