The recent UK Brexit vote passed by a simple majority (52% in favor). Yet, here in America such an action would almost certainly be regarded as a "treaty" and require a 2/3rds majority in the Senate to enact.
At the state level, US states have varying supermajority requirements. For example, the famous Proposition 13 in California requires a 2/3rds legislative majority to pass a tax increase (even though the proposition itself was passed by (barely) less than a 2/3rds majority of the voters).
So, should the Brexit have been determined by a simple majority? If not, why not? And what other matters should require a supermajority in order to become law? less

The church is widely known as a hate group and is monitored as such by the Anti-Defamation League and the Southern Poverty Law Center. The church has been involved in actions against gay people since at least 1991, when it sought a crackdown on homosexual activity at Gage Park six blocks northwest of the church. In addition to conducting anti-gay protests at military funerals, the organization pickets celebrity funerals and public events. Protests have also been held against Jews and Catholics, and some protests have included WBC members stomping on the American flag and/or flying the flag upside down on a flagpole. The church also has made statements such as, "thank God for dead soldiers," "God blew up the troops," "than... less

They got Britain out (which I did not vote for, but they won fairly!) but surely it is up to other countries to say if they want to be in the EU? Why hope for the break-up of the entire institution? Why be so bloody-minded about it?

It is only the European Commission that is not elected, but instead, appointed by the elected MEPs, to whom it only acts as a kind of steering group, anyway. But the House of Lords is not at all democratically accountable. So, if they are so big on democracy, why are they not equally vociferous in demanding democratic accountability in that?

Minnesota has collected enough signatures to put a secession referendum on the November ballot. Voters will be asked to decide if they want Wisconsin to leave.
