Do you buckle up for safety or because it is the law?

I buckle up to shut up that stupid beep in the car. 

i'm hearing impaired so I buckle up to shut off that annoying flashing light.

I much prefer to zip it...:)

I buckle up for safety. I don't need the nanny state to tell me what to do.  It's my body and if I choose not to, it's no one's damn business.  They don;t tell me I can't smoke or drink. What right does the gov have to tell me that I HAVE to wear a safety belt? That's crap

In New Hampshire 18 and over are not required to wear a safety belt.

I buckle up mostly because
I like the look and enjoy the feel of straps and harnesses. 
For me its all about fashion and the comfort of restraints.

Safety.  "An object in motion stays in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force."  I'd rather not become a projectile (like a water balloon tossed against a wall).

I buckle up because if I get into an accident, I would prefer not to be a human projectile through my windshield although my airbag and the steering wheel would probably prevent that.  

To set an example. My grandkids are in a five point harness, I'd rather they don't grow up thinking that Grumpy is a hypocrite.

Just to be awkward... neither... I do it from habit :P It's been law here so long I would feel odd if I didnt!

A little of both---it's definitely safer and I have no particular desire to give the police an opportunity to pull me over when I am on my way somewhere.

On the other hand, although the possibility of being struck by lightening is real, I don't wrap a chain around my ankle when I walk in the rain.

when I lived in NH I almost never buckled up because in NH you can do whatever you want because LIVE FREE OR DIE 

but now i buckle because the beep in the car is annoying and the longer you wait the faster it beeps :l

Both, but it has been law here (in the UK) for a long time now so it's habitual. (1980s? I forget when the law was passed.)
