My cat costs me about $800 annually for food, probably couple hundred for litter, catnip, toys & stuff.
I had one cat that cost me about $1000 medical expenses but that was over his lifetime of 19 years.

Australia - GPs are free, that's why our taxes are higher. Universal healthcare, every civilised nation in the world has that, EXCEPT the US. But it doesn't cover pets.
For my cat....Dentists and Drs. Her dentist told me she needed a thousand $s for teeth problems plus $300.00 for blood work. Last time... some cat beat her up cost $700.00 to repair wounds. ...not counting flea stuff every month toe nail clipping every month. plus can food, dry food, treats... Yikes!!
Great question. I especially appreciated the footnote to your question. My mind jumped to the emotional and mental costs to me (selfish me). But as the only human in my household, I miss my cats who have passed.
I guess I've never thought about the financial costs.
