That is true for me too. When I lived in an apartment that didn't allow pets I would walk down alleys to pet the dogs in the back yards. Once I even started going to Tupperware parties because the host had a cool dog and they would let me play with the dog after I bought something. Cheers and happy weekend!
I went many years without due to frequent relocation and being married to someone who saw pets as essentially disposable and replaceable. Never again! It's just no way to live, in my opinion. My kids and I would go to shelters and play with dogs before we could finally have one. We'd take them out and play, that sort of thing. And it tore me up to leave them there. I really should volunteer now, but it rips my heart out. I'm teary thinking about it now! I donate and support, but I can't go in there and see it. Too painful, their eyes. My newest was in a temporary foster home, so we didn't have to go to the actual shelter. My other current dog is from a very sad shelter not far from where I live, and we actually went in person and went through the kennel rooms and it was so overwhelming. They look at you with their sad eyes that scream "save me, pick me"! Too painful!

Interesting comments. My sister has two dogs - a Wheaton terrier and a standard poodle, both adopted from owners who could no longer care for them. Just yesterday we were talking about rescue dogs and how difficult it would be to foster a dog. You get so attached to them an then you have to give them up. Neither of us could do that. If we had unlimited funds, we would buy a piece of property and take in the dogs that no one seems to want, especially the older ones.
I'll bet they don't shed much if any! I love both breeds! I agree that fostering would be too hard, but I'm so thankful for those who do it and help keep dogs out of shelters. And thank goodness for shelters, of course! The whole situation is so sad, with dogs living in terrible conditions in puppy mill type backyard breeders, all the animals without homes and in cruel homes where they're abused and neglected. Wouldn't it be great to have unlimited funds to dedicate to the causes important to us!
Neither of them shed much because they don't have fur, they have hair. I think puppy mills should be outlawed and breeding should only be done if you're going to show the dogs. Yes, I do wish I had unlimited funds to care for dogs. :)
