Harry Chapin wrote this one about his time as a student at Cornell, and it brings back fond memories of Ithaca, NY, to those of us who have lived and/or gone to school there. As the name suggests, College Avenue is one of the main drags of Collegetown, a neighborhood adjacent to Cornell's campus and home to many students.

Sadly, Harry died in a traffic accident 40 years ago next month.

Oh, wow. I don't think I knew that; shame on me.

I listened again to the song.

    I never heard it before.

(I love the accompanying instrumentals along with his voice and guitar.)

3:18 to 3:26   -- lovely image of him

    That is pretty.

I'll bet my mom liked this song. Wish I could ask her!

Did you go to school there or just live there?  I think it would be kind of cool to have a road in your town or by your school that was made famous in a song.

Went to school and graduated with my BA. Walked up and down College Avenue countless times. The off-campus bookstore, Triangle Books, two of my favorite bars, Ruloff's and the Nines, and Collegetown Bagels were (and one or more of them may still be) on College Avenue, which crosses a stone bridge over Cascadilla Gorge onto campus. Cornell is rather famous for its bridges, two gorges, and kids who commit suicide by jumping, and a very clever marketing person conceived the slogan "Ithaca is Gorges," which adorns bumper stickers, sweatshirts, and tee shirts.

Highway 101 is a popular highway that gets mentioned a lot in songs.  I can think of this one and at least two others right now.

Oh. But that’s not a road or street song.

I know. Notifications took me back to this question thread and I saw your mention of George Benson's 'On Broadway' and that's all there was to it.

I can be random like that, even when I'm only high on life and coffee. :)

The song references the Canning Highway between Fremantle (where singer Bon Scott spent much of his youth after his family emigrated from Scotland) and Perth. Called the "Highway to Hell" due to a disproportionate number of fatal crashes before the Western Australian state government straightened it out.

    On Second Avenue ...

I like Highway to Hell but I didn’t know it was about an actual highway in Australia.  Thanks.

The song’s kind of sad but I really love those rainy empty street scenes.

This is one of those songs that I was hearing the lyrics wrong.  When I was a kid I thought it was “6th Avenue Harley”, which was a motorcycle dealership on 6th Avenue, lol.
