Did you ever have a problem not being good enough for your significant other's family?

      No, that has never occurred with my wife’s immediate family or extended family, but among more distant extended family members (most of whom are US Navy families and US Coast Guard families), when my wife’s brother’s mother-in-law found out that we were planning to get married, she exclaimed to others in horrified fashion, “ . . . he’s a Marine, and he’s BLACK!” My wife and I didn’t hear about it until 25 years after she said it. We merely laughed. It was irrelevant to do or say anything different.

    I had begun going out with kind of free spirited young lady whose parents were a bit of a class above the common sailor kind of people. They tolerated me but I did get to realize that they wanted their daughter to never develop a serious relationship with a guy of my kind of social standing and mediocre earnings.

      In addition to being awful in general, was your husband’s ex-wife awful to you specifically, meaning was she catty or nasty to you?

    Yes. She was nasty with me, very vulgar talking woman as well.  I lined her out...I do not think she thought I would. And I did it without sinking to her level.  She liked to use her child as a weapon.  The child was the only reason we had any contact with her.  She played games sometimes claiming my husband was and other time was not the Father.  Legally he is not...but there was never a test to my knowledge.  But there was a ruling by the judge in their divorce.

    Nope.
    In fact, my ex in-laws liked me better than the ex-wife.

    I'm not good enough to even have a significant other in the first place, let alone his family.

    I don't know his family but I doubt that will be a problem.  I have high standards and am very likable.

    That's a good point, I hadn't thought of that since I've never met them.  It's a better excuse rather than a bowl of lettuce and another career that didn't include me.

    Well, after I accepted a marriage proposal, he did not marry me.  Instead he moved to another state and began a new career farming.  Instead of a bowl of lettuce being first choice, I'd rather think his family didn't like me.  That is a little easier on the ego. 

    So he didn't want to live life with me after all.

    My M-I-L wondered what made my husband pick me.  She finally warmed up to me, though.  My husband and my M-I-L get along well with each other, but they have a weird relationship to each other.  It’s like they’re both from two different planets.  Why he picked me was an absolute mystery to her.  When I went out with my sisters-in-law, they asked me some things about my husband and I didn’t have a clue what they were talking about.  They just said “But our stepmom said…”.

    No. But I was probably viewed as never drunk enough in my former in-laws' opinions. 

    I guess that's how they're able to live with each other.
