Have you ever been affected by a severe storm?

The only time I had property damage from a storm was from a hailstorm in 2017.  I needed roof repair, siding repair and a window replaced.

I had storms with small hail, lots of rain and lots of lightning last night and this morning between 4:00 and 5:00 where I live.

Yesterday, the Emergency Alert System was on the radio stations I get from Minnesota all afternoon and evening.

Affected in what way(s)?  I was vacationing in southern Florida back in August of 1992 when Hurricane Andrew blew through.  That affected me and my plans egregiously!

That counts. I saw some of the aftermath , a year later they were still cleaning up.

It wasn’t one particular instance, but what immediately came to mind when I read your question was being overseas in Asia during monsoon season. It is hard to describe for those who have never been in a place where a monsoon hits. It’s not a question of one storm, one time, one day, because monsoon season conjures up a lot of surprises. Over a period of hours or days or weeks the weather fluctuates from one extreme to another during monsoon season, it might actually be calm or even just a little bit rainy for a certain time. But when the heaviest rains and the heaviest winds hit, it can really be destructive. Those calm periods can last for just a few minutes, just a few hours, or all day long, all night long, and it’s just the same with the heaviest rains and heaviest winds; it can be just a few minutes, just a few hours, or all day long, all night long. Everything about timing is extremely unpredictable during the monsoon. Another thing about monsoons is that the temperatures also fluctuate greatly, going from very cold to very humid. This is especially true when the monsoon borders on being a typhoon, I went through that at least a few times.

Doesn't sound like somewhere I'd want to be.

No we have been pretty lucky in our area. Actually it probably isn't luck it is location. We are protected from sever weather systems by mountains and the Straight of  Georgia. Cheers!

That imaginary grammar cop would look more official if he was wearing a pair of  lederhosen.

After seeing that I think I am going to write SNL and suggest that they make a skit about a imaginary grammar cop and cast Kenan Thompson as the grammar cop. I will also suggest that part of Kenan Thompson's uniform will be a pair of lederhosen. Cheers! This post was edited by Nanoose at May 12, 2022 9:26 PM MDT

Technically, no.  However I have had a large oak tree fall on my house due to heavy snow.

Anything that causes a tree to fall on a house counts!

We had three severe storms this February - Dudley, Eunice and Franklin. The last of these brought down a roof tile and caused part of our stone boundary wall to collapse. The builder who gave us an estimate for the damage said he believed it was indirectly caused by trees growing close to the wall. The force of the trees swaying in the high winds caused abnormal root heave which shook the wall enough to dislodge the stones (it's dry-stone, built without mortar, so it sounds plausible). But the insurance company insists it is normal wear and tear and won't pay

  • I was affected by the 2012 Buenos Aires tornadoes. The funnel went over my house and it became a tornado two kilometres away. The electricity was out for three days and we were under martial law.

Yes, some years ago, New York was devastated by Hurricane Sandy.  They are still trying to recover from it in some areas.

6 years ago. A "once in 50 years weather event" brought down power lines all over South Australia, blacking out the entire State. It was turned into a political football by opponents of renewable energy, a ridiculous argument. It doesn't make a difference if the power is generated by coal, gas, hydrogen, solar, wind, nuclear or a million white mice running in wheels - if the transmission lines are down, it's not going anywhere.
