We never called Marines squids. We had much more colorful names.

I agree with Element (who is a veteran of the US Navy): I* have only heard ‘squid’ in reference to sailors, never to Marines (I am a US Marine Corps veteran). As you stated, Marines are referred to as jarheads, and in addition to that, leatherneck, Devil Dog, gyrene, sea-going bellhop are other nicknames of Marines.

*I am not stating that you have not heard it that way, I’m only stating that I have not.

    “ . . . Squid is what other branches
    (especially Marines) generally called sailors."

Thank you; that distinction did not come across in your original reply, which read as if you meant the word was attributed to Marines in addition to sailors.

Before she retired, my sister was a licensed escort. That one doesn't need a clever nickname. Without looking it up, how many know what that job is?

When I worked in a cube farm, we were referred to as "meerkats" - because when anybody stood up, that's what it resembled.

Numerous cubicles in an office setting are referred to as cube farms due to the way their layouts somewhat resemble plots of cultivated fields.
