How can anyone possibly defend disco music?

It's by far the worst kind of music as a whole and it's lasting influence on pop music has been nothing but a travesty.    From the sound to the style it's tacky and an assault  on the senses and good taste.

It's a clear sign that mixing Quaaludes and cocaine is a very bad idea.

  • Is the combo a wash or does it make it worse?

  • We'll call it a wash, two forms I generally don't like got together and made a funny baby. ;)

  • Bluegrass is an American treasure.  Deep, introspective, and musically complex and can also be fun and joyous.

  • Treasure? We'll have to agree to disagree on that. Like with Rap. Totally repugnant to the ears. Admittedly neither genre is dependent on my dollars, good thing too.
I don't love disco, but it would be well ahead of hillbilly crooning on the playlist.

  • Yes a treasure.    Saying bluegrass is hillbilly crooning  is like saying jazz is negro noise.
fair enough you don't like it but do we need to use derogatory slurs? This post was edited by Benedict Arnold at April 3, 2017 7:10 PM MDT

  • Your analogy is overplayed. Nothing wrong with being a hillbilly, and crooning is a compliment. Don't contrive hate merely because I disagree. This post was edited by Benedict Arnold at April 3, 2017 6:30 PM MDT

  • Overplayed?   How so?   That it's been said a million times which never heard that mentioned.

No hate here Z,  just mucking around.  No need to get all "feels" here.

  • No worries.
There was nothing derogatory intended in my reference to hillbillies. Good folks. Just don't share their taste in music.
I happen to enjoy jazz quite a lot, by comparison.

  • I love jazz too.   It has it's crap like anything too, but as a whole.

I know what you meant,  just screwing with ya'.  ^_^

  • Disco is the most insipid and uninspired type of music ever created IMHO.

  • Yea, we get that. Point taken.
Not particularly my cup of tea either, but not so much worse than some of the tripe currently being peddled as music.

  • That is true.  So much of the crappy pop music now though is inspired by disco's shallowness and simplicity IMO.
Take Nikki Minaj, Miley Cyrus, and Ke$ha as examples. So horrendously awful.

    I love it too... it is it's tackiness, it's over the top-ness, it's over glitziness.. It's cheerful...fun....

Disco was created to prop up what was becoming a dying industry -- the nightclub.  How do you get a new generation of young people to dance all night long, spend their money on booze (and illicit drugs)?  With songs of pure escapism that would appeal to teens coming of age. Like this little ditty:

    Enjoy! :-)

You young 'uns don't know nothin' from nothin.'  Believe me, drugs were never wasted at Studio 54.

  • When there was so much good rock and Grateful Dead concerts I certainly can.

I never said I wasn't into the Dead too.  I was also into punk and new wave.  It all depended on the mood, the crowd, & the invites.  I can't remember how many Dead concerts I went to.  At various times Studio 54, CBGB, The Bottom Line, and The Blue Note.  Small clubs I can't even remember the names of.  At that time, it was all good fun and it was all exciting.  I even saw this guy perform at a tiny nightclub in Albany, NY.  LOL!

It's the best music to dance to. I can't sit around my house or drive my car and listen to it, but dancing all night, absolutely! I just started thinking about Donna Summer and I'm already shaking my booty.
I used to dislike country music, then I heard it was conceived by folk who wanted music that expressed a simple time in our history. So, now I'm okay with it. I just can't hate any music, it all serves a purpose.

  • Country is an odd duck.  The crap on the surface is the foulest garbage.  Hidden underneath are some true gems though.

I was going to note that quaaludes were all the rage back then, but I see you've already explained that element ;)

  • As they were pulled from the market so did disco die.   Coincidence?   I think not.
