What do people gain by post election political bashing? Do they have inefficient coping skills?

Seriously, some University classes were cancelled the day after election to "help students cope". This seems ridiculous to me but maybe you can help me understand.

Some people, never accept their candidate lost and just want him/her to fail until their party can take over again and fix things.

I'm not sure if you have noticed but since Nixon was forced out of office, we have not had anyone interested in fixing things, except maybe Jimmy Carter, and I'd say most economists would agree he should have stayed on the peanut farm.

Reagan came along and things got better but they almost had to, so not sure how much credit he deserves. We needed someone Smarter than Carter but that would have been about anyone. Since then not one single President has had significant positive impact on this country. Sure you might argue Clinton did but the repercussions of all that was catching up with him as his last term winded down.

Anyway, what if we had more optimistic views about our country and took more personal responsibility, learned to accept things until we can change them? Is anything like that possible?

What shocks me more than anything Trump has said is all the people that tried to vote a known-criminal into office and still support a man who divided the country more than since the 1970s.

  • Like you, I was a tad flabbergasted when some classes were postponed to allow sensitive young people to cope. Counselling the young in all manner of situations which, in my day, would have been the catalyst for interested excitement, is symptomatic of our current -- and I hope temporary -- mindset that thinks young people have to be coddled.

The Trump-bashing may be a uniquely American phenomenon. Few countries indulge in the level of political hatred shown by the zealot element of both parties. I could name at least six or eight people who came to aM, tried it, and left because of the constant barrage of hate "questions" posted here every day.

In Oz this sort of thing wouldn't get off the ground. I doubt if Australians, as a group, have sufficient confidence in our politicians to become outraged about election results.

Well, there was this one time about 1974, but the anger didn't last long...

  • I'm very familiar with Blighty (and the Old Dart, for that matter) but I thought the term had dropped out of use after WWI.

My father fought in that war and he used the word fairly often.

Discuss and debate, learn the lessons.. However, in this case I firmly believe that the conversations are not about regret and the election but about the president's continued erratic and very questionable behaviour.. It reflects badly on America..

Oh, I don't know---If I were living just before the "Dark Ages" and had seen such an obvious and palpable sign as the election of a Trump as foreshadowing our rapid descent into that "Dark Age,"  I could have used a day off to regroup.

Some people thought that precisely what kind of person becomes president of the US is not important as long as someone is there.

I guess there is hope that we will understand that such a thought may have indeed been a dangerous and perhaps even an irresponsible one. This post was edited by tom jackson at April 6, 2017 7:49 PM MDT

  • So I take it that you are to come here and decide what is the right amount of time for people to deal with whatever they need to deal with.

  • I'm not in the states so whether my comments apply or not are up for debate...
From the perspective down here it was a case of hope for the future being replaced with lies and manipulation... It wasn't so much the candidates, but the loss of hope... In my view

It's just another excuse for another day off. So they could spend it socially instead of getting down to work. That's all it is.

It's religious. The whole country has been possessed by a spirit of bonkers.
