I wonder if intellect is the opposite of instinct. It doesn't seem to be, because instinct is a type of intellect, right? Also, the presence of instinct doesn't necessarily mean the absence of intellect. Both can be present in the same species. ~
I don't think so. I think intellect has to do with the process of defining and processing. So, instinct is knee-jerk automatic. Maybe we can say they are both part and parcel of instinct, because instinct has to come first. But whether or not intellect is determined by instinct, is not something I know as any fact.
I guess like with firefighters running into a burning building. Instinct would make animals and people run away from the fire and smoke, but some people can go against that instinct to save the lives of others.
Overthinking? Over-analysing? I'd imagine it's where you ignore your gut instincts and start examining all the fact, comparing and contrasting every detail and then basing the decision on that analysis.
I am, by nature, very indecisive.. if I start to think about things in order to make a decision I tie myself up in knots and end up really not knowing which way to turn.. like Robbie the Robot in Forbidden Planet. SO for me I often do just go on instinct.. it's served me pretty well thus far.
I think they are the same thing...and I think *my* suggestion that the opposite of instinct or gut instinct is not listening to it, even drowning out it's voice so we never hear it anymore and thinking things through to the point of painstaking.
