Stable bedding, aviary floor cover, kitty litter. Mulch or compost, provided gypsum is added to balance PH. Insulation in walls, provided fire retardant is added. Compressed fiber-board. Assist in starting a wood fire. Texturing agent in artist's acrylic paint or wall-paper. Synthesizing fabrics such as viscose or rayon.
The janitor of our elementary school used to clean the floors with sawdust that had some kind of stinky cleaner mixed with it. He sprinkled it all over the hall floors and then push-broomed it up. His name was Perry. Every student loved him. I remember him but I do not have clear memories of any of my elementary school teachers.
I am led to understand a certain proportion of ground coffee, as sold in cans and packets, is sawdust. I was shocked when I first heard it, but I quite expect there to be an excellent excuse other than simply making the coffee go further. Probably supposed to absorb something or other. To those of us with especially sensitive olfactory apparatus it sometimes happens that coffee has a distinct cat-pee smell (not the smell of coffee itself). I have arbitrarily speculated the bags of coffee beans are stored in large warehouses and to keep down the inevitable rodents cats are let loose to roam the building - and inevitably pee on some of the bags. The other usefulness of sawdust comes in when great-great-grandma is starting to look a bit sad over there against the wall, and she needs a little plumping up to restore her one-time elegance and grace. Dad bought new eyes for her about thirty years ago, but last time we moved her to clean up a bit one fell out and rolled under a loose floorboard and no one has yet bothered to look for it. I must remember to do that when I have a chance.
