They are too numerous to name (or even to call to mind right now).

    "Earth Angel" by The Penguins
"Silhouette" by [sorry, I can't find it]
"I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch)" by The Four Tops
    "Runaway" by Del Shannon

    And many, many more.

Nice choice. I've just been listening to them.  Apart from Runerway, I didn't know the others.

Thanks, BH Wilson, for hitting the nail on the head!  I had the title wrong; its plural instead of singular. It appears that Herman's Hermits were not the original artists, though. After your clue, I tried again and found it in wiki:

"Silhouettes" is a song made famous by the doo-wop group The Rays in 1957. A competing version by The Diamonds was also successful. In 1965 it was a number 5 hit for Herman's Hermits, and in 1990 it was a number 10 hit in the UK for Cliff Richard.

You've posted a response to your original question instead of posting a comment to someone else's reply to your question.

  • Not only their first hit, but the first hit for the recording of the song that was written in 1932. This post was edited by Benedict Arnold at January 20, 2018 7:42 PM MST

A play on "Halley's Comet". Edmund Halley had one comet, Bill Haley had a bunch of them. A crossover band, bridging the tail end of the Big Band era with the dawn of Rock 'n' Roll.
